Identification Criteria & Process
The district's identification procedures are equitable, comprehensive, and ongoing. They reflect the district's definition of giftedness and its relationship to current state criteria. (EC 52202: Title 5 Regulations, Section 3822)
How are students identified?
Intellectual and High Achieving Gifted students are identified by scoring in the top 5% of nationally norm-referenced tests, the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) and Otis Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT).
Visual & Performing Arts (VAPA) GATE students are identified through audition and portfolio evaluation.
Who is tested?
Students are referred for testing by teachers and/or parents who have completed a Nomination Form. Nomination forms must be received by Friday, February 16th.
When are students tested?
Students will be tested during the month of February. Permission slips for testing are distributed by the GATE Coordinator, who will then schedule the students to take the test. Students must return the signed permission slip by the deadline in order to be tested. Parents will be notified of GATE eligibility by the second week of March.
Once students have been identified as GATE, they are always considered a GATE student and will not be re-tested.
